About Columbus, Ohio

Columbus, located at the population center point of the United States, is the capital of Ohio and the 15th largest city in the country. A large presence of governmental operations in the city provides the largest single source of employment within Columbus. Financial services firms also provide a large portion of the job market. Nationwide Insurance and Huntington Bancshares both have their world headquarters in Columbus, and J.P. Morgan Chase & Company, Fifth-Third, and Key Banks continue to maintain a major presence in the city. Retail giants Limited Brands and Abercrombie & Fitch are both headquartered in the Columbus area. Manufacturing companies with a strong central Ohio presence include Honda, Worthington Industries, and Budweiser. Finally, the Ohio State University is located within the city of Columbus, which provides the region's workforce with a steady flow of innovative minds and energetic spirits. This rich combination of industry, academia, finance, and retail have helped Columbus' economy maintain its strength in contrast to its rust-belt sister cities.

Columbus has a number of distinctive neighborhoods within its boundaries. The Short North, situated just north of downtown, is rich in art galleries, dining, pubs, and specialty shops. A number of large Victorian homes are located nearby, and together they comprise Victorian Village. Just east of Victorian Village is a community of late 19th century Italianate homes that comprise Italian Village. To the South, German Village is known for its quaint 19th century brick cottages, and it holds the distinction as the largest privately funded historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. The Ohio State University, situated north of the Short North area, is populated by over 50,000 students during the school year-- the largest enrollment of any U.S. college. Columbus' northernmost "High Street Neighborhood" is Clintonville, which contains many ravines and hills with beautiful old stone and brick-faced homes, bungalows, and 1930s-era Craftsman homes. Clintonville is also home to Whetstone Park, which contains a beautiful 13-acre rose garden.

In June 2006, American Style Magazine ranked Columbus as one of the top 10 big cities for art and the National Civic League awarded Columbus its All-America City Award, which is the oldest and most respected community recognition award in the nation. In July 2006, Forbes.com named Columbus the 11th best city for singles. Columbus is a major hub for live music entertainment, with a nice variety of small clubs and larger venues including High Five, Newport, Lifestyles Communities Pavilion, Nationwide Arena and Germain Amphitheater. The Ohio State Buckeyes football team is by far the most influential sports entity in the city; however, Columbus boasts the NHL's Blue Jackets, the MLS's Crew, and the Washington Nationals' Triple-A Affiliate, the Columbus Clippers.
